  What I found interesting was the users they have selected for the 280 char privilege: almost all that I have noted add original and interesting thoughts/content to the website. I can also vouch that many would be willing to pay for the privilege - maybe Twitter is exploring how to use that.

  Even if they screw up everything that can be screwed, Twitter can survive easily for at least 5 more years as a mainstream social media website.
  
  Indian government has almost every important functionary signed up and active on Twitter (but not on Facebook!). Many of them actively interact with general public. One notable example is our Foreign Minster Sushma Swaraj she routinely picks up complaints raised to her via Twitter and expedites them.
  
  She isn't the only one.
