I love that idea actually. People may just want to read and not participate so this is a great option.

I like the #NewHere initial post as a draft idea :)

In Diaspora, you can choose not to post it, it is presented like a draft or something. #NewHere is a good tag to have for beginners, btw. Helps them find resources better.

Also, it shifts the decision to the newb if he wants to use it.

I'm not quite getting the thread, but in Diaspora (if I remember correctly), your first post is automatically populated with something like "I'm #NewHere", so you could follow that tag if you wished. I don't recall there being any sort of drawback.

True. I guess we could offer to fill in a welcome message for them to post.

@Joe But that might be intimidating for others... :D

Yea I think it could get really noisy you're right. I'll have a think. The good thing about a post is it automatically subscribes the new user to the post so people can interact with them straight away.

@Joe This could be very noisy if pjuu scales up. When I joined there was a greeting on the user page directing me to #pjuu, which was sufficient. This leaves it up to the user. We could also add a #bot which users could "ask for directions".

Yea that would work also. Like "Hello @name #welcome to #pjuu"

I always thought #pjuu was a nice tag for welcoming new users:)

There is no direct way to see this. I can in the dashboard which just shows me a couple extra things like server status and that. I was thinking of adding a welcome message when someone activates their account so you see it on the global time line or looking at a hashtag like #welcome.
