  I have not used PixelFed (nor Instagram, which is supposed to be similar), but I did talk to the dev in IRC one day and found out that there is an option that can be enabled to lock down an account for family viewing only.

  I use #Pleroma and #GNUSocial ... rarely #Mastodon (I have accounts on each).
  
  I enjoy them, mostly. One does have to actively curate one's own timeline, but that is true anywhere once enough people join. One can ask the admins and moderators to effectively curate it for you, but eventually they will block or kick off people you would rather still communicate with.
  
  Mastodon has simplified its default interface, so it isn't the Tweetdeck style 3-4 columns anymore.
