@Rooster1980, I don't understand your last comment. Can you explain to me what it means?

I would only ever install AV if I had a file share that non-trusted programs had access to (users) or a mail server to check incoming and probably outgoing mail. In the past I have used Clam and it's pretty easy and secure enough for my use cases. Other than that I can recommend Kaspersky, however unless you really need it I would say AV is more of a security threat (especially proprietary) than not having it.

@Stolensoul Those days are over. >30% malware targets Linux, see eg. https://geekguide.linuxjournal.com/content/childhood%E2%80%99s-end-attackers-increasingly-take-aim-linux-systems

@Pensador_13 However, the UNIX security model (groups, permissions + SElinux) goes a long way to mitigate the system compromise. You don't need root to delete ~ though.

Some admins use ClamAV on file shares to prevent cross-system infections. The same applies to promiscuous USB dongles.

    See the linked PDF book.

Clam AV is ok for relatively old threats and active analysis, but not for new ones or passive protection.
But since Linux is not as flawed nor targeted as other systems, you should not need more than a few script blockers and such on your browser, and to be a bit careful.
