    > You're not supposed to ... check everything yourself

You can't because there's just too much info pouring in. But check before you forward should be a thing, as should remaining skeptical of things you (or someone you know and trust) haven't checked.

@Joe You're not supposed to go out and check everything yourself, of course. It's more about: recognizing a dubious claim as such; knowing how to evaluate sources' credibility; being open to new information; contrasting matters of fact and subjective opinions.

Critical thinking is a desired learning experience and skill for public education. It can't be addressed directly by technology, and a failure to address it has already caused a lot of crap.

@sigg3 I completely agree with you about echo chambers. Like/Dislikes are a popularity contest more than an indication of the quality of content. This leads to chambers forming and their opinions being reinforced as they have a direct indicator to the number of people who think like them.

On the empirical evidence front, that can be hard to find on the internet. You need critical thinking to even decipher it in most cases. The vast majority of people will take what their news source says.

The danger of joining echo chambers is not inherent to the web, but the web facilitates it considerably. There are technological ways to deal with this (for instance, focus more on empirical evidence than number of likes/dislikes); but I personally believe that this is a problem in how we approach information, or rather, if people are not critical to new information or their own biases it's a failure of education. The internet is not a school.

@Pazuzu you're saying everything that is true on the web is sourced outside the web, and that the web is just a way to distribute information?

    He's sure got a point.
On every corner of the web, something or someone keeps spelling opinions out for you.
I mean, even if this someone has got the same or alike opinion as you, you stop thinking about it yourself.
Plus the fact, that you don't save things you learn on the web too deep, since you can always come back to this later on.
