So here is an interesting one. What Linux Distro would I be able to install on a 1GB HDD, for just a web browser? Its a rather tight fit, and even a Debian minimal install won't fit.

I would use Puppy Linux. It only requires I believe 200 mb of space, loads completely into ram. More info on thier page http://puppylinux.com/

I suggest SliTaz GNU/Linux. It needs around 100MB of space.

+1 for SliTaz, I tried it on a old laptop a few years ago (I remeber that even Lubuntu was laggy on that machine) and worked flawlessy. The only major problem that I encountered was with the audio settings, but I managed to solve it somehow.

Personally, I would recommend you to at least try Trisquel (the "mini" version in your case), which is a fully-free (as in libre) Ubuntu based distro.

I don't care too much about iy being fully RMS compliant but I will give you one thing.

Trisquel has somewhat of a nice UI.
