Well ordered a 14" PineBook last night! I think someone here showed me it. Finally got a coupon so I could order. Pretty good $139 inc delivery (only about £100). https://www.pine64.org/?page_id=3707

@Dirk The research that goes into CPU architecture is really expensive, so licensing it out to OEMs is a way Intel and AMD can get their money back. (+profit of course)

Unfortunately, backdooring is politicized, so even if we manage to create consumer grade open hardware, there's a chance that it won't be accepted (in law or in increased surveillance).

I always feel I have to repeat myself: There's no technological solution to a political problem.

@dirk I think it's because the IP is 100% of a hardware companies business. They do not like parting with it.

But why is "open hardware" always so deep below the standards? 🙁

@dirk I agree they aren't great. But hopefully this is a sign of things to come for ARM based, open laptops.

Those specs ... This thing gets outnumbered in RAM and CPU even by mediocre smartphones 😂
