Well my Pinebook turned up and it's actually pretty nice for the money. I'm quite impressed. Came with Ubuntu MATE installed and seems relativley quick for the quad core ARM 64-bit processor. Everything seems fine and as a development machine it will definitley do it's job. Pjuu runs and builds fine. MongoDB, Redis, Python and PostgreSQL all run fine.

@Sidney Yeah, you should stay away from anything without T or X in the model name.

No, it was a Lenovo Thinkpad E540. That has been the last Thinkpad I have worked on recently. Probably stands for Economy-540 or something. :-p

@Sydney that doesn't sound like ThinkPad. Are you sure it wasn't the vastly inferior Edge or Ideapad or something?

    I have not used all models of course:p (T61, T530, X1 and T420s.)

Interesting. I have dealt alot with the Dell XPS desktop line, and they are very good, so i'm sure the laptop line is just as good. Ive dealt with a couple Lenovo Thinkpads as well in the past, and I do like their build quality, but I don't really like the fact that if something breaks you have to find the same identical part(for example, I cannot use a different WiFi card). I fix a handfull of people's machines as a hobby. Almost anything is better than HP though...

Not sure if it's still the case but the XPS and the ThinkPad's were still more money than the Macbook Pro. I use a 13" and a 256GB SSD one is about £1,200. I haven't looked at the others in a long time... I'm so used to the Mac keyboards that I find it almost impossible to type on a standard UK keyboard.

@Sydney @Joe @Ant Lenovo #ThinkPad ftw. At work, we have both ThinkPads and Apple. IMO ThinkPads are still superior (better usability, better replacement scheme, better performance, no weird ports).

As an alternative @sydney there's always the XPS range from dell ... roughly the same price as a mac too

Ah, I see. Very interesting. Thanks for sharing! Yeah, I should buy a Macbook one day, even if I don't run OSX. Most of their hardware is great.

TBH @sydney I haven't used it all that much. I tried it out for a few days and there was a few annoying things from a usability PoV. It's so light that typing makes it bounce around and the keys take some hitting to make them activate. But other than that it works pretty well... I think I may have ruined low end laptops for myself as I use a MacBook Pro which is just rock solid in every way. It's nice to have it there for the 64-bit ARM dev but I haven't needed it just yet.

I know it has been 9 months, but I was just curious how this "tinker toy" has been working for you. I am looking at the possibilities of getting one in the future. The main reason I haven't jumped for it is that it seems that there is not a huge community behind it.
