  It's the only alternative to Play store, IMO, and a good one too. Luckily, it seems to be a great interest in it. If F-droid fades away, something else will pop up. It's the backbone of package management on many f/oss images (cyanogenmod).

  Yes, i hope it stays alive as well. It does seem to have quite a big community to keep it alive if they want to though.
  Maybe this explaines why the app store hasn't been gettting a update every two weeks or somewhere around there like it used to.
